Meet Doug and Carol Zimmerman from Pensaukee Valley Certified Organic Farm.
After many steps to become “certified organic”, they are one of the few that continue to hold that status. “Everything you do, the equipment you use, and maps of what is planted, needs to be documented and reported. Right down to the seeds you use.” said Carol, after a recent inspection at the farm.
Although they have a full garden variety, right now the tomatoes are ripe and plentiful. They have several varieties of tomatoes that are from all over the world. Heirloom varieties are some of the favorites of top chefs in the area. There are standing orders for certain, beautiful and taste specific varieties.
Did you ever eat a red, grocery store tomato in the middle of our winter? Blah! Zimmerman’s tomatoes burst with flavor. Sweet and tart, pretty and ugly, big and small, and all the colors under the rainbow – your favorite tomato is there waiting to be discovered.
Pensaukee Valley Certified Organic Farm also has a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program where you can purchase a share over the garden season. Find them at our Market on Military on Thursday’s from 3-7 in the Green Bay Plaza lot.
