Collaborate Locally: Building Community Through Place

After extensive research on nine possible sites across Military Avenue, Murphy Park emerged as the clear choice for a permanent, year-round home for the Market on Military. Nestled in a well-known and easily accessible part of Green Bay’s west side, Murphy Park offers mature trees, green space, and a central location that supports community-wide benefit.

In collaboration with the City of Green Bay, this facility is designed for long-term sustainability—leveraging public investment, green infrastructure, and existing park resources. When the market is not in session, the space will serve a variety of community functions: recreation, lifelong learning, public events, family gatherings, and seasonal celebrations.

Designed for Inclusion: A Truly Multi-Use Space

This project reflects the mission of Military Avenue, Inc.—to revitalize and reimagine Military Avenue as a vibrant, inclusive corridor. The farmers market facility will be open, accessible, and community-centered:

  • An open-air market hall offers flexibility for vendors, events, or simply a shaded spot to relax in the park.
  • A patio and gathering space provide an inviting place for all ages and abilities.
  • A fully certified commercial kitchen will serve as an incubator for local food entrepreneurs, allowing vendors to preserve Wisconsin’s abundant seasonal produce and scale their offerings beyond the market.
  • Education and gathering areas will support cooking classes, youth programs, cultural activities, and workforce development. The possible uses are extensive!

Secure a Permanent Home: No More Wandering

After nine years of setting up temporary markets in parking lots and vacant buildings, the Market on Military deserves a place to call home. This facility provides permanence and stability for the dozens of local vendors, growers, and small businesses that have built a loyal customer base on Green Bay’s west side. We love our “regulars”.

By providing protection from extreme weather and a space to grow, we ensure that year-round access to fresh eggs, baked goods, meats, and produce continues—even in the heart of Wisconsin’s cold winters.

With this home base, Military Avenue, Inc. can expand both its summer and winter markets, increasing vendor capacity and visitor experience.

Create a Lasting Impact: Revitalizing Green Bay’s West Side

Military Avenue was once the prime shopping destination in Green Bay during the 1960s and ‘70s. Today, it’s undergoing a quiet renaissance—and this project is a key catalyst. The year-round market and community hub will:

  • Strengthen the existing business district, known for its diversity, off-price retail, and beloved all-day breakfast spots.
  • Support neighborhood identity and cohesion through consistent programming and events.
  • Offer an anchor destination that draws both longtime residents and new visitors to the area.

Military Avenue, Inc., a nonprofit community development organization, has the trust of local businesses and the momentum to lead this project. With a long-term lease, public-private support, and built-in sustainability, this project isn’t just a market—it’s a gathering place, an economic engine, and a reflection of Green Bay’s resilience and resourcefulness.
